I watched cloverfield a couple of days ago. I was expecting a lot because of all the hype surrounding the movie. Well, I can't say I was disappointed but I wasn't thoroughly satisfied either.
What I like about the film is the use of the Handheld cam as the primary perspective. It's somewhat refreshing. It makes you part of the action. You see the events as how the characters on screen see it. The negative effects of using a handheld cam is it makes you a bit nauseated. Since it is in the perspective of the camera, a lot of scenes were shaky.
The casting was great too. They didn't use very popular actors. As a result, no actor is hugging the screen. In my opinion, I'm don't really know much about acting, they did a pretty good job.
Don't expect too much screen time for the monster though. At first I was really frustrated because he monster wasn't shown a lot but I realized that it adds more to the excitement and mystery that is Cloverfield. Also, there isn't much background story for the monster and where it came from.
Overall, the film was pretty good. It has all the elements of a monster/disaster movie. But like I said, I just expected too much.
Favorite line:
Cameraman: Okay, so our choices are we die in here, die in the subway, or die on the streets.
